Why Our Faith Falters (featuring Carlton Anthony)

We’ve all been there. You start out with a vision, a burst of divine momentum, or a deep sense of calling. You step out of the boat. The water feels solid beneath your feet. You're doing it—you're actually walking on water.

And then, the wind picks up.

In our latest MOV Spiritual Growth Session, led by Carlton Anthony, we dove deep into one of the most relatable moments in Scripture: Peter’s wild, miraculous, and ultimate sinking-spell on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 14:28–33).

If you’ve ever felt your confidence shake, your vision blur, or your knees buckle under the weight of life's storms, this session was a masterclass in understanding why our faith falters—and exactly how to get our footing back.

The Anatomy of a Sinking Faith

Carlton kicked things off by grounding us in Hebrews 11:1: "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." It sounds beautiful on paper. But as men navigating the modern world, translating that "unseen evidence" into daily survival can be a battlefield.

According to Carlton, there are three primary reasons our faith begins to erode:

  1. Shifting focus from Christ to our circumstances.

  2. Moving from a posture of faith into a state of fear.

  3. Relying on human wisdom instead of divine direction.

The guys in the room didn’t hesitate to keep it real about where these battles hit hardest. David pointed out that health crises test our trust in God’s unseen timing like nothing else. Byron brought up the crushing weight of financial hardship and career instability—it’s tough to look at the "unseen" when the very visible bills are piling up.

Meanwhile, Dwayne highlighted a deeper, more internal struggle: the anxiety of purpose. “Am I actually operating in God’s will, or am I just running in circles?”

The Reality Check: Encountering a storm does not mean you are out of God’s will. Sometimes, obedience takes you right into the choppy waters.

Faith vs. Trust:

One of the most powerful debates of the session sparked around the definitions of faith and trust.

Ricky challenged the room to see them as separate concepts. He argued that faith is taking a blind leap without knowing why, noting that even Peter’s initial request ("Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come") showed a sliver of doubt.

Carlton jumped in to weave these ideas together, offering a brilliant analogy: Faith and trust often act as synonyms, much like sitting in a chair. You don't inspect the joints or calculate the weight capacity before you sit; you just trust that it will hold you.

The 3-Second Recovery

If you take nothing else away from Peter's story, take this: A lapse in faith is a stumble, not a terminal failure.

Dwayne made a profound observation about Peter’s descent into the water. Even as he was sinking, his faith hadn't fully collapsed. How do we know? Because he didn't try to swim back to the boat, and he didn't yell at the other disciples for a life vest. He cried out, "Lord, save me!" That cry in itself was an act of faith.

Carlton reminded us of the beautiful grace hidden in that moment: Returning your focus to God doesn't require a long, exhausting journey back. It doesn't require a checklist of spiritual achievements. It only requires a humble cry for help. Jesus is close enough to catch you the moment you ask.

The 3 Pillars of Walking by Faith

To help us navigate the winds of the modern world, Carlton laid out three non-negotiable pillars for men of faith:

  • Pillar 1: Faith Means Obedience. It’s not just a feeling; it’s a compliance with God's directives, even when they don't make sense to the crowd. Carlton highlighted Dwayne’s bold personal commitment to never work for someone else again—a costly, terrifying, but ultimately liberating step of faith.

  • Pillar 2: Lean Not on Your Own Understanding. Human wisdom will always tell you to stay in the boat where it's dry. Divine wisdom tells you that the water is safer if Jesus is standing on it.

  • Pillar 3: Storms Are Not Signs of Failure. The presence of a trial doesn’t mean God has abandoned you; it’s often the exact arena where He intends to reveal His power.

Sight vs. Faith:

To wrap up, Carlton left the room with a heavyweight question: “What is the biggest difference between living by sight and living by faith as a man in today’s world?”

The contrast the guys came up with says it all:

Living by Sight Living by Faith
Needing to know exactly where the road ends. Walking the road without worrying about the destination.
Constantly comparing yourself to other men. Trusting God right where you are and letting Him lead.
"Keeping up with the Joneses." Keeping up with the Creator.

Step Out of the Boat

Men, the crowd will always stay in the boat. The crowd wants validation, safety, and predictability. But you weren't called to live a comfortable life inside the hull.

As we move into this week, let’s refuse to let the storms dictate our faith. Stop looking for crowd validation. Set some goals that scare you. Move only when God directs—and if you happen to look down and start to sink, remember that the hand of God is just one humble cry away.
