David became a social and political magnet, attracting “every man who was in distress, who was in debt, and every man who was bitter of spirit.” These men rallied themselves around David, looking to him as a leader. Remarkably, these men did not start as great individuals, but through David’s leadership, they were transformed. As one commentator noted, “More than all his victories against outside foes, the influence of his life and character on the men nearest to him testify to his essential greatness.”
This was no small gathering—the group numbered around 400 people, representing the core of David’s bodyguard who remained faithful during his wilderness years. This core group eventually expanded to 600 men. (1 Samuel 22:1-3)
